MAPUTO, Mozambique – July 21, 2025 – The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), through its Market Access for Mozambican Aquaculture Products (MAMAP) project funded by NORAD, kicked off today, in partnership with the National Fish Inspection Institute (INIP), with a four-day training course for 20 INIP officials. The main objective of the training is to strengthen the sector’s compliance with international requirements for the export of aquaculture products.
The training, which runs from July 21 to 24 in Maputo, is a direct response to the need to develop the aquaculture value chain in Mozambique, a sector with great potential. Participants from various provinces are deepening their essential knowledge of aquatic animal health, disease transmission, legislation, and health control and inspection methodologies.
At the official opening of the event, Lúcia Santos, Director of INIP, highlighted the importance of the initiative: “This training is extremely important. By training our inspectors, we are investing directly in food sovereignty and security, and positioning Mozambique as an exporter of safe, high-quality aquaculture products in the global market. The knowledge acquired here will be replicated at the provincial level, ensuring a national impact.”
Jaime Comiche, UNIDO Representative in Mozambique, underscored the concrete impact of the partnership: “I would like to highlight the ongoing support that the project has given to the Fish Inspection Laboratory (LIP) for the implementation of the Residue and Contaminant Monitoring Plan. This support, which enabled samples to be sent to internationally accredited laboratories, was crucial in maintaining Mozambique’s status as a country approved for the export of aquaculture products to the European Union. This is a success that belongs to all of you and proves the value of this collaboration.”
During the four days, six main modules will be covered, including aquatic animal biology, disease diagnosis, prevention and control, sustainability, and health management inspection procedures.
