Maputo, 27 November 2025 – The Market Access for Mozambican Aquaculture Products Project (MAMAP) held a SWOT analysis workshop that brought together representatives from key sector institutions, including ADNAP, IDEPA, INIP, INNOQ, the Ministry of Economy, and private operators. The working session, which lasted over three hours, aimed to identify the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats characterizing the country’s aquaculture value chain.
MAMAP is part of the Global Market Access Programme (GMAP), resulting from the agreement between UNIDO and Norway concluded in January 2020, with the central objective of improving market access for Mozambican small and medium-sized enterprises through strengthening quality and compliance capacity with international standards.
The session began with the presentation of diagnostic results conducted with quality control institutions, governance entities, and SMEs in the sector. The mapping identified 55 companies nationwide, although the diagnosis was limited by the low number of survey responses. Among the most relevant findings, none of the surveyed companies had obtained an operating license despite being in operation for between four and eight years, highlighting the need to adapt licensing requirements to the reality of producers.
The participatory exercise addressed critical factors such as inputs, financing, infrastructure, biosecurity, and human resources. Participants identified significant constraints, namely limited access to financing, inadequate infrastructure along the value chain, dependence on imported ingredients for feed production, and a lack of feasibility studies. Conversely, promising opportunities were recognized, including growing demand for aquaculture products in national and international markets and Mozambique’s high natural potential, estimated at four million tonnes of fish.
Participants’ contributions will continue to be collected in the coming weeks, paving the way for a second meeting where strategic priorities for the National Marketing Strategy for Aquaculture Products will be validated.
