🐟🌍 From July 15 to 19, a dedicated MAMAP project team visited Gaza Province to evaluate local aquaculture associations, examining their activity levels and potential for forming cooperatives to boost economic performance.

This initiative is part of the Global Market Access Programme (GMAP) in Mozambique, led by UNIDO – United Nations Industrial Development Organization, with support from the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (Norad) and in collaboration with the Mozambican government through the ‘Market Access for Mozambican Aquaculture Products (MAMAP)’ project. The goal is to enhance the aquaculture value chain and improve market access.

In addition to the UNIDO team, the mission included officials from the Fisheries and Aquaculture Development Institute (IDEPA) and a technician from the Mozambican Association for the Promotion of Modern Cooperativism (@AMPCM).

The team visited associations in the districts of Xai-Xai, Limpopo, Chibuto, Macia, and Chonguene, with similar assessments conducted in the provinces of Maputo and Inhambane.

The purpose of this diagnosis is to enhance the aquaculture value chain, where artisanal fishermen and aquaculturists are vital in supplying fish to consumer markets. Strengthening cooperatives has proven effective in developing the sector, empowering participants, boosting incomes, and increasing state revenues through the licensing and formalization of operators.
