The MAMAP Project – Market Access for Mozambican Aquaculture Products – leaves behind one of its most important contributions to the sector: a set of technical manuals, practical guides and support materials designed for producers, technicians, extension workers, public institutions, cooperatives and companies across the aquaculture value chain.
These materials were not developed to remain on shelves. Their value lies in practical use: improving production, reducing sanitary risks, strengthening fish quality, supporting producer organisation and helping sector actors move towards more demanding markets. The manuals cover key areas such as biosecurity in production units, aquatic animal health, disease notification, sample collection, quality control, fish handling and processing, licensing, technical standards, business planning and cooperative development.
The central message is clear: aquaculture becomes competitive when quality, organisation and knowledge work together. A producer who understands disease prevention, proper handling, quality requirements and business planning is better prepared to reduce losses, protect investment and negotiate in formal markets.
Under MAMAP, implemented by UNIDO with funding from Norad and in partnership with national institutions, these knowledge products were developed to continue supporting the sector beyond the project period. They can be used in training, technical assistance, extension work, SME support and institutional decision-making.
More than technical documents, the manuals provide a shared learning base for Mozambique’s aquaculture sector. If adopted and used by institutions, producers and partners, they can help strengthen a culture of quality, increase consumer confidence and improve readiness for national, regional and international markets.
