Maputo, May 28, 2025 — The GMAP Mozambique Project, implemented by UNIDO with funding from NORAD, has taken another strategic step toward strengthening Mozambican aquaculture. At a technical meeting held on May 27, the INSITE team of consultants presented the progress made in the diagnosis and training of 17 aquaculture companies distributed across the provinces of Maputo, Gaza, Sofala, Inhambane, and Tete.

During the session, it was confirmed that all companies had received training in good management practices and biosecurity, as well as an introduction to the HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points) system. However, only four companies have demonstrated that they are currently able to receive direct support for the full implementation of HACCP, as they already have minimal processing infrastructure and some degree of compliance with legal requirements.

The training was essential to raise awareness among producers about the importance of food safety, even among those who do not yet have the structural conditions to move forward with HACCP,” said Yasmin Langendoerfer of UNIDO.

A consolidated table was also presented with all diagnostic data, including tank type, presence of health licenses, degree of operability, existence of processing rooms, and hygiene practices.

The next steps include issuing and delivering training certificates to participants, accompanied by a personalized road map and checklist that guide companies not yet eligible on the steps necessary to achieve compliance with the required standards.

HACCP implementation activities are expected to take place between June and July, culminating in a series of communication products that will give visibility to the results achieved. The ultimate goal is clear: to support Mozambican companies in becoming more competitive and prepared for national and international markets, ensuring safe, sustainable, and quality products.
